With parents detained, Uighur kids in care of Chinese state

Sep 21, 2018

ISTANBUL — Every morning, Meripet wakes up to her nightmare: The Chinese government has turned four of her children into orphans, even though she and their father are alive. Meripet and her husband left the kids with their grandmother at home in China when they went to nurse Meripet's sick father in Turkey. But after Chinese authorities started locking up thousands of their fellow ethnic Uighurs for alleged subversive crimes such as travel abroad, a visit became exile. Then, her mother-in-law was also taken prisoner, and Meripet learned from a friend that her 3- to 8-year-olds had been placed in...

Iran's domestic car market stalls as nuclear deal falters

Sep 21, 2018

TEHRAN, Iran — Across Iran's capital, rush-hour traffic always grinds to a halt, a sea of boxy Renault four-doors and Peugeot coupes all idling their way through the streets of Tehran. Soon, however, Iran's faltering nuclear deal with world powers may be what causes the country's domestic automotive market to stall out. As Iran's currency suffers precipitous falls against the U.S. dollar — the rial lost two-thirds of its value against the dollar since President Donald Trump withdrew America from the accord — cars are growing more and more expensive even as tens of thousands clamor to order domestic models...

Indian flight returns after passengers ill by pressure loss

Sep 21, 2018

NEW DELHI — A Jet Airways flight returned to Mumbai, India's financial capital, on Thursday after dozens of passengers complained of ear pain and nose bleeding due to the loss in cabin pressure. An airline statement said Flight 9W697 with 166 passengers and five crew members landed normally in Mumbai. Medical help was given to 30 passengers. Oxygen masks were deployed during the emergency aboard the Boeing 737, said Darshak Hathi, a passenger. According to Flightradar24 aviation tracking site, the plane stopped climbing at 11,000 feet (3,350 meters) before returning to Mumbai. Hathi also said there was a problem with...

India bans instant divorce by Muslim men

Sep 21, 2018

NEW DELHI — India's government on Wednesday approved an ordinance to implement a top court ruling striking down the Muslim practice that allows men to instantly divorce. The government decision came after it failed to get approval from Parliament a year after the court ruled that the practice of allowing men to divorce by simply uttering the Arabic word for divorce — "talaq" — three times violated the constitutional rights of Muslim women. Most of the 170 million Muslims in India are Sunnis governed by the Muslim Personal Law for family matters and disputes. The laws include allowing the practice,...

Egypt says it fights fake news, critics see new crackdown

Sep 21, 2018

CAIRO — Echoing some of President Donald Trump's rhetoric, authorities in Egypt are taking aim at an alleged barrage of "fake news" they say is meant to sow division and undermine the rule of general-turned-president Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Under a new law, the state's top media regulatory agency can now use the "fake news" label to shut down social media accounts with more than 5,000 followers, without having to obtain a court order. Another new law allows blocking websites with content deemed a threat to national security. Last month, the government set up a unit tracking alleged rumors, after el-Sissi claimed...
