Racist tropes in Ramadan TV satires anger black Arabs

Jun 23, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In an attempt to capitalize on what's become a ratings bonanza for Arabic satellite channels during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, two comedies struck the wrong chord with audiences when their lead actors appeared in blackface. Criticism was swift on social media, but failed to trigger a deeper discussion on racism in the Middle East. The shows — one produced in Egypt and the other in Kuwait — also poked fun at Sudanese culture, making a mockery of the Sudanese Arabic dialect and portraying darker skinned people from Sudan as either poor or lazy....

Popular hashtags take sides on Egypt president's leadership

Jun 23, 2018

CAIRO — Tens of thousands of Egyptians have set social media alight with tweets on opposing hashtags, one calling on President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to resign and another praising his leadership. The hashtags surfaced after a recent wave of steep price hikes for fuel, drinking water and electricity was introduced by the government as part of austerity measures designed to overhaul the economy, which is still recovering from a costly 2011 popular uprising. The hikes were announced as Egyptians were celebrating Eid al-Fitr, a holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a move believed to be designed to...

Tens of thousands join Indian leader for world yoga day

Jun 23, 2018

DEHRADUN, India — Some 50,000 people gathered with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in the Himalayan foothills to salute the power of yoga. Modi, an ardent Hindu nationalist, traveled to the hill town of Dehradun for the fourth International Day of Yoga, and shortly after sunrise was doing yoga exercises with about 50,000 people. Yoga "is enriching millions of lives all over the world," Modi said in a speech. He also urged Indians to take pride in their heritage. "The gems of India's unique heritage, such as yoga, will be respected by the world at large only when...

Afghan bomber kills 19, Taliban rejects cease-fire extension

Jun 23, 2018

KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide bomber struck in Afghanistan's eastern city of Jalalabad on Sunday, killing at least 19 people in the second attack in as many days targeting Taliban fighters, security forces and civilians celebrating a holiday cease-fire. The Taliban later rejected an extension of the cease-fire. Najibullah Kamawal, director of the provincial health department, said another 60 people were wounded in the attack, which struck a crowd of people as they left the governor's compound. Saturday's attack, which also took place in Jalalabad, killed at least 36 people and wounded 65, according to Kamawal, director of the provincial...

The Latest: Afghan Taliban reject cease-fire extension

Jun 23, 2018

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Latest on the war in Afghanistan (all times local): 8:15 p.m. Afghanistan's Taliban has later rejected an extension to a three-day cease-fire coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced a nine-day extension of the cease-fire after a suicide bombing killed 36 people on Saturday, in hopes that the Taliban would respond in kind. But on Sunday the Taliban announced that their cease-fire had ended and that they have no intention of extending it.
