In a recent interview, tax lawyers Steven and Benjamin Goldburd at Goldburd McCone LLP, New York, revealed three key aspects of protecting yourself from tax liabilities.

When asked to comment, Steven Goldburd said, “One of the biggest problems among our clients is that they are so frightened of the power of the IRS and have no clue how to approach dealing with an IRS dispute.”

“One of the best ways to tackle this,” he said, “is to become what we call a ‘smart taxpayer’ with three key steps.”

1. Become Educated

One of the best things to do in dealing with tax issues, like any subject, according to Mr. Goldburd, is to become educated in the process.

“Tax professionals can help break down complex information about tax law, how it applies to a particular case and more importantly how the progression of your case will evolve,” Mr. Goldburd commented.

He added that while Goldburd McCone LLP works on a case, they work hand in hand with their clients to ensure that they don’t resume the bad habits that got them into this predicament.

“We want to find long-term solutions for our clients, so they don’t have the same issues with the IRS a year later. We try to permanently fix the problem both at the governmental level and at the client level, instead of simply applying a band-aid like a regular resolution service,” Mr. Goldburd said.

2. Contact the Right Professional

Another key aspect of navigating the tax landscape is to have the right counsel leading the way. So be sure to contact the right professional.

“Many firms will speak the right jargon, but the right lawyer will make you understand that your situation is serious, and will not be undone with any quick fixes. They will then proceed to outline a detailed plan on what needs to be done and what need to change,” Mr. Goldburd said.

Competent tax attorneys will also of course provide the honed expertise needed to navigate a complex IRS issue.

When asked to comment Benjamin Goldburd was quoted as saying, “For example, a lot of people trust the IRS and think their word is absolute. However, as experienced tax attorneys, we often uncover mistakes made by the IRS, or another tax professional once we fully delve into the entire tax situation. By finding the errors, the misconceptions, and the misread code sections we we can often cut balances in half or eliminate any debt completely.”

3. Avoid Tax Resolution Myths

An important aspect of being a smart taxpayer is to steer clear of mythical tax resolution firms, in the Goldburds’ opinion.

The reason for this is they have seen multiple cases where unrealistic expectations have been set in terms of wiping out tax debts.

“Some mythical tax resolution firms charge clients an upfront fee which can be three of four thousand dollars and then subsequent monthly payments with the promise of settling a case for pennies on the dollar.”

This promise is rarely met in their experience for the people concerned, even after months of waiting around. “There is no way to magically settle a case in this way, the only real way to work through the issues piece by piece.”

Generally though such firms might seem advantageous at first, and even cheaper at the start than a tax law firm like Goldburd McCone LLP. However, the end result will probably be more expensive, especially if you have to fix further problems that have arisen from inexperience or neglect of the case.

Bahrain sentences prominent activist to 5 years in prison

Feb 24, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A prominent human rights activist in Bahrain was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison over tweets alleging prison torture in his country and misconduct in Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen, despite wide international criticism of his trial. Nabeel Rajab's sentencing marks the latest chapter in a yearslong crackdown on dissent in Bahrain, a tiny island kingdom off the coast of Saudi Arabia that's home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. He's already serving a two-year sentence handed down in July over television interviews he gave that included criticism of Bahrain. Rajab has been hospitalized...

Luxury property ad blitz heralds Trump son's visit to India

Feb 24, 2018

NEW DELHI — "Trump has arrived. Have you?" shout the barrage of glossy front-page advertisements in almost every major Indian newspaper. The ads, which have run repeatedly in the past few days, herald the arrival not of the American president but of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is in New Delhi to sell luxury apartments and lavish attention on wealthy Indians who have already bought units in a Trump-branded development outside the Indian capital. The newspaper ads promise that buyers who order apartments in the development by Thursday will get "a conversation and dinner" with Trump Jr. a...

UNICEF says Pakistan is riskiest country for newborns

Feb 24, 2018

ISLAMABAD — The U.N. children's agency in a report released Tuesday singled out Pakistan as the riskiest country for newborns, saying that out of every 1,000 children born in Pakistan, 46 die at birth. "It's abysmal," said Dr. Ghazna Khalid, a leading obstetrician in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province. "We don't need front-line medical doctors. We have plenty of them. We need skilled midwives." The report, with its dismal figures that show South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa as the worst places for a child to be born, is part of UNICEF's new campaign, launched to raise awareness to bring down...

Pakistani students rally against Valentine's Day

Feb 24, 2018

LAHORE, Pakistan — Hundreds of pro-Islamist university students have rallied in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore to show their opposition to Valentine's Day. Wednesday's rally came days after Pakistan's media regulatory authority, based on a court order, instructed all news channels, radio stations and print media to refrain from promoting Western culture's celebrations of Valentine's Day. Students belonging to the Islami Jamiat Talaba group peacefully dispersed after marching at the Punjab University campus. A Pakistani court last year also asked authorities to ensure a blackout on any promotions in print or electronic media of Valentine's Day, which has become increasingly...

Fresh twist for UAE diners as oysters thrive in warm waters

Feb 24, 2018

FUJAIRAH, United Arab Emirates — The waters of the Persian Gulf have long been home to pearl oysters, providing a valuable mainstay to Arab tribes that subsisted off its trade before the discovery of oil pumped new life into the Arabian Peninsula. Now, off the shores of the United Arab Emirates, a new type of oyster is thriving — the edible kind. Long thought of as a cold water delicacy, edible oysters are being farmed in the warm waters of Fujairah, an emirate with a coastline that juts out into the Gulf of Oman. The local delicacy has made its...
