Dr. Ronald A. Popper understands that lack of awareness can prevent individuals from getting the treatment they need, and points out estimates from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke suggesting up to 10% of Americans may have RLS symptoms to some degree. With his announcement, he is raising awareness of these worrying statistics - noting that the condition affects both adults and children at any age.
The National Institute's data also reveals approximately 80% of people with RLS also endure periodic limb movement of sleep disorder, causing the legs to unpredictably cramp, spasm, or jerk repeatedly through the night.
“It is our mission to determine if you have a disorder, identify that disorder, and then help you determine the appropriate course of treatments and solutions,” a spokesperson says.
The first step in treating RLS, Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center says, is identifying and addressing any underlying conditions that could be causing or contributing to symptoms. They also note that behavioral changes - such as limiting coffee or going for more walks - can be beneficial in the short term.
If symptoms persist, medical options include dopamine agonists and receptor agonists. While effective, the clinic says long-term use of these drugs may result in side effects like nausea, dizziness, or muscle cramps in some patients.
As an alternative to pharmaceutical therapies, the team also offers Relaxis: an FDA-cleared vibrating pad that is placed under the legs. This applies gentle counter-stimulation during sleep and has been shown to reduce RLS symptoms without disrupting rest.
A recent patient said: “Very professional office with excellent, well trained, pleasant and caring staff. Dr. Popper is very thorough, efficient, and caring. He explained what all his findings meant and answered all my questions to my satisfaction.”
